NEW YORK (AP) — New York state is putting $1.5 million toward a memorial to the victims of the 1911 Triangle factory fire, one of the worst industrial disasters in U.S. history.
The New York Times reports (http://nyti.ms/1QIUqhF ) that the memorial will be made up of steel panels and will be put up along the outside of the Triangle factory building near Washington Square in Manhattan. One of the panels will be etched with the names of the 146 immigrant garment workers who died. Another panel will showcase the history of the fire.
The blaze highlighted their unsafe working conditions and spurred calls for change.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the funding this week. The money is coming from economic development funds.
