FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) — Bowe Bergdahl isn't yet entering a plea on charges including desertion, and he hasn't decided whether he wants to face a court-martial with a jury -- as opposed to one with just a judge. The Army sergeant was arraigned today at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. He disappeared from his post in Afghanistan in 2009, and was held by the Taliban for five years.
WASHINGTON (AP) — NASA has called off its next Mars mission because of a leak in a science instrument. The Insight spacecraft was supposed to take off in March and land on the red planet next year. But NASA said today that managers have suspended the launch because of an air leak in one of two prime science instruments. The lander is designed to examine the geology of Mars in depth. Launch opportunities for Mars only occur every two years. It's not clear whether NASA has canceled the mission entirely or is delaying it until 2018.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Boeing is agreeing to pay $12 million -- for, among other things, failing to meet a deadline for some safety measures. The Federal Aviation Administration says Boeing missed a deadline to submit service instructions that would let airlines reduce the risk of fuel tank explosions on hundreds of planes. Those instructions are part of an effort to address problems that caused a fuel tank on a 747 to explode off Long Island, New York in 1996. All 230 people on the TWA flight were killed.
SHENZHEN, China (AP) — There are mounting questions today in southern China about why leaders in the region's most prominent manufacturing city weren't able to prevent the collapse of a mountain of construction waste over the weekend. It left 76 people missing. Today, rescuers recovered a man's body in the first confirmed death from the mudslide at a construction dump site.
NEW DELHI (AP) — Lawmakers in India have decided to lower the age at which a person can be tried as an adult for the most serious crimes -- from 18 to 16. The move follows anger over the release of one of the attackers in a fatal gang rape from three years ago. The man wasn't yet 18 when he and five other men brutally raped a 23-year-old woman on a bus in New Delhi. The victim later died. The young man served the maximum of three years in a reform home and was released Sunday.
