MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian government has given the sports ministry three months to take charge of the Moscow anti-doping lab at the center of a major drug scandal.
Russia's track and field federation was suspended by the IAAF after a World Anti-Doping Agency panel accused the country of operating a widespread, state-sponsored doping program and covering up positive tests.
The Moscow lab and Russia's anti-doping agency were suspended following the publication of the report.
The Tass news agency quoted Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko as saying the government will take over the lab before turning it into an independent nonprofit organization which will be free to operate not only in Russia but also abroad.
