ELY, Nev. (AP) — A 30-year-old Carlin man convicted of illegally killing a trophy mule deer in Great Basin National Park has been sentenced to three years' probation.
Tyler Cobb also must pay a $9,000 fine, forfeit his 7mm rifle and is banned from hunting, fishing or trapping for five years.
A judge in Ely originally gave Cobb a year in jail, but suspended the sentence as long as he stays out of trouble for three years.
Cobb pleaded guilty last month to shooting the deer about a half-mile inside the park along the Utah line in November 2014.
Chief Game Warden Tyler Turnipseed says the park has many trophy-sized animals and some people can't resist going after them even though they know hunting is prohibited there. Use of a firearm of any kind is also banned within park boundaries.
