ELKO, Nevada (AP) — A man with 30 years of experience as an educator is Nevada's 2016 Michael Landsberry Teacher of the Year.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports (http://bit.ly/1NXWAU1) Adobe Middle School eighth-grade civics teacher John Tierney was chosen from 23,000 teachers statewide.

Interim Superintendent of Public Instruction Steve Canavero presented the award in a Friday ceremony. Afterward, Tierney said he was "blown away" and that he would work to make his fellow teachers "as proud of me as I am of you."

The award means Tierney will travel to Washington, D.C. to meet the president and Secretary of Education. He will be involved at Nevada's Department of Education and in events including the NASA Space Camp.

Tierney moved to Nevada to teach in 1989 after spending five years in California's Fremont Unified School District.
