MIDLAND, Texas (AP) — A West Texas woman faces up to 30 years in prison for stealing $140,000 in apartment rental money and faking cancer treatment documents.
Judy Kay Fryar of Midland pleaded guilty Wednesday to wire fraud and to obstruction of justice.
Federal prosecutors in Midland says the 54-year-old Fryar embezzled cash payments as the on-site apartment complex manager for SKP Holdings of California.
The theft was revealed in 2011 when an owner visiting the Midland complex encountered a resident trying to pay rent with cash.
The obstruction count involves Fryar since 2013 having court dates reset 10 times by forging hospital documents to say she was being treated for cancer and not fit for trial.
Hospital officials in 2012 had notified Fryar that she did not have cancer.
She's held pending sentencing.
