CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A stretch of freeway in Carson City has been dedicated in honor of a fallen deputy who was slain earlier this year. Gov. Brian Sandoval and city officials attended a ceremony yesterday to name the freeway, known as Interstate 580 or U.S. 395, after Carson City Deputy Sheriff Carl Howell. The deputy was shot and killed Aug. 15 while responding to a domestic violence call.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A national organization has ranked Nevada best in the nation for policies on charter school oversight. A report issued by the National Association of Charter School Authorizers gave the state a perfect score on its 2015 analysis, tying it with Indiana. The group said laws passed in 2013 and 2015 helped boost Nevada's score.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A federal judge in Reno is refusing to temporarily block new U.S. rules intended to protect the greater sage grouse. Judge Miranda Du said yesterday that nine Nevada counties challenging the regulations have failed to prove any irreparable harm that could be averted by immediately halting their implementation. Du said opponents can argue their case at a trial, expected to begin early next year.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Officials have announced plans to reconnect Reno to Oakland with the launch of three daily nonstop flights next year. The Southwest Airlines flights announced Tuesday from Reno-Tahoe International Airport to Oakland will begin June 5. Travelers can start purchasing tickets this week.
