COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina sheriff says the man who shot at his deputies this weekend was a felon using a stolen gun.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said at a news conference Monday that 59-year-old Roger Hale will be charged with two counts of attempted murder in the Saturday night shooting when he is released from the hospital.

Lott says three deputies shot at Hale after he opened fire. They were not hurt. Hale was struck several times.

Lott says deputies were responding to a Columbia home on a 911 call from Hale's daughter, who said her father was acting strangely. Lott says Hale came out with a gun with a laser sight, aimed it at officers and fired before the deputies fired back.

It isn't known whether Hale has a lawyer to contact for comment on the case.
