SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Hundreds of people are expected at today's memorial service for Olene Smith Walker, the only female governor in Utah history. Walker is considered a trailblazer for women in politics in the conservative state. Walker died Saturday in Salt Lake City from natural causes. She was 85.
WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) — Gov. Gary Herbert's office says the Republican governor will not propose another Medicaid plan after state lawmakers rejected his proposal earlier this year. Herbert's chief of staff says the governor is instead waiting to see what proposal lawmakers come up with in 2016. The Senate embraced Herbert's plan but the House rejected it, citing concerns that federal money may not be there in the future.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Federal prosecutors in Utah say a man from the United Arab Emirates tried to buy 89 sniper rifles and smuggle them to Belarus. The U.S. Attorney for Utah says Kolar Rahman has been indicted on four charges that he tried to buy the weapons from an undercover agent. The case started after a Salt Lake City firearms manufacturer was contacted about shipping guns to Belarus.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police converged on a Utah high school yesterday and ordered a lockdown after a student reporting seeing someone with a weapon, but authorities later determined the statement was fabricated. The Alpine School District says police didn't find any weapons during a room-by-room search Pleasant Grove High School. No students were hurt.
