HELSINKI (AP) — American Christel Lee beat 38 competitors to win the international Sibelius violin competition with a cash prize of 25,000 euros ($26,500).
Emmanuel Tjeknavorian from Austria — the only male among the six finalists — won second prize worth 18,000 euros and also was awarded for the best interpretation of Sibelius' violin concerto — a compulsory performance for all six finalists.
The third prize of 12,000 euros went to to Friederike Starkloff of Germany, in the 12-day competition that ended Thursday.
Three other finalists — Mayumi Kanagawa of the United States, Japan's Minami Yoshida and Nancy Zhou of the U.S. each received a prize of 2,000 euros.
The 11th International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition is open to violinists younger than 30 and has been held here every five years since 1965.
