MILWAUKEE (AP) — Texas Sen. Ted Cruz says the federal government should not bail out failing banks. That was his response to a question during the GOP presidential debate. Cruz's comments drew criticism from Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who said he wouldn't ignore people who have their life savings in these banks. Though the focus of the two-hour debate was the economy, the eight rivals also discussed immigration, taxation and foreign policy.
HAVANA (AP) — Three Chinese naval ships have arrived in Cuba to mark the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Communist Party-ruled countries. The visit comes as Cuba and the United States work to normalize relations after more than 50 years of official hostility. China is a key ally of Cuba, and its No. 2 trade partner after Venezuela. The visit comes amid high tensions between Washington and Beijing in the South China Sea.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Two men described by federal authorities as white supremacists preparing for "an impending race war," have been charged in Richmond, Virginia, with trying to illegally buy weapons and explosives to use in attacks on synagogues and black churches. An affidavit filed by an FBI agent says Robert C. Doyle and Ronald Beasley Chaney III tried to buy an automatic weapon, explosives and a pistol with a silencer from three undercover agents posing as illegal firearms dealers.
LADSON, S.C. (AP) — Authorities in South Carolina say a 13-year-old who was at home alone used his mother's gun to shoot and kill a burglar. The Charleston County Sheriff's Office says the boy said he heard someone trying to get into the home Tuesday afternoon, so he got his mother's gun and went to the back door of the home. Authorities said the boy told them he fired the gun through the door and the person outside fired back. The would-be burglar died at the hospital where he was taken.
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — A blizzard warning has been issued for tonight and Wednesday in the Great Plains east of Denver. And parts of the Midwest could be hit with high winds and tornadoes. Wet, heavy snow fell in Nevada Tuesday, forcing schools to close and knocking out power to thousands.
