REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Jul 21, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- A California woman whose due date was a month away delivered her own baby on the bathroom floor.
Julissa Witzel told the San Jose Mercury News she did not make much noise during the birth because she did not want to scare her 4-year-old daughter, who was watching cartoons on television. Afterwards, Witzel dialed 911 and then was able to open the door for the ambulance crew, although the baby was still attached by the umbilical cord.
"I was in complete shock, and I couldn't believe I had done what I had just done," Witzel said.
Witzel at first thought she was in false labor. When she realized it was for real, she called her parents and her husband's parents as well as her husband -- but then did not have time to call for medical assistance.
The baby, Audrey, appears healthy, if a little premature, the newspaper said.
