HOUSTON (AP) — Five deaths in Texas over the last 48 hours are being blamed on the violent storms that have produced flooding and tornadoes in various parts of the state. Officials in Houston say one body was discovered in a flooded ditch today and another in a wooded area east of downtown. Yesterday, two bodies were recovered after flooding in the Austin and San Antonio areas. A third was found today in Travis County. The search continues for a woman who was swept away from her Austin-area home Friday.
CAIRO, Egypt (AP) — Investigators are trying to determine what caused a Russian passenger plane to crash in Egypt's northern Sinai today, killing all 224 people on board. The Islamic State group is claiming responsibility, but Russia says the claim is not credible. Egyptian forces have been fighting militants in the region for years. Two major airlines, Lufthansa and Air France, say they will avoid flying over the Sinai Peninsula until the cause of the crash has been determined.
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Donald Trump is releasing a plan aimed at improving veterans' health care. The Republican presidential contender is previewing his policy paper at a campaign appearance in front of the battleship USS Wisconsin in Norfolk, Virginia. Trump says he wants all veterans eligible for care from the Department of Veterans Affairs to be able to receive treatment from any doctor or facility that accepts Medicare.
ISTANBUL (AP) — A day before parliamentary elections, Turkey's prime minister is urging Turks to vote for stability by restoring his ruling party's majority. Tomorrow's contest is a rerun of a June election in which the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, lost its majority after 13 years of single-party rule. Opposition parties are campaigning against a man not on the ballot: President Recep Tayyip Erdogan (REH'-jehp TY'-ihp UR'-doh-wahn).
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Health Authority says it is investigating E. coli cases linked to Chipotle restaurants in Oregon and Washington state. The agency says three people in the Portland area and at least 19 people in Washington have become sick after eating at the Mexican food chain since Oct. 14. Chipotle says it's closed all of its restaurants in the area and is working with health officials to determine the cause.
