STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — The lawyer for a 25-year-old woman accused of driving a car into a crowd of people at an Oklahoma State University homecoming parade over the weekend insists she wasn't drunk. Four people died and dozens were injured. Adacia Chambers of Stillwater faces her first court appearance today on charges including second-degree murder. Attorney Tony Coleman says he thinks Chambers has a mental illness.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Canadian authorities say a whale-watching vessel made a distress call before it sank off Vancouver Island on a calm, clear and sunny Sunday, killing five people. Officials say 21 people were rescued and another person is still missing. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police takes over that search today.
WASHINGTON (AP) — This is the week House Republicans plan to elevate Paul Ryan from top recruit to the head of the class, but if the Wisconsin Republican expects a honeymoon period, he could be in for a surprise. Ryan is expected to become speaker after a private vote Wednesday and a full House vote Thursday. He'll take office just as deadlines on divisive issues pile up in front of him, including a possible government default, and the potential for a partial government shutdown.
BALI, Indonesia (AP) — After years of hiding in Australia, plans to take a vacation have brought down a former Indian primary school teacher facing the death penalty for the murders of 20 young women. Mohan Kumar is accused of using cyanide to kill the women from 2003 to 2009. He was arrested on the Indonesian resort island of Bali and police say he told them where he had been.
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Race officials say the supposed second-place finisher in Kenya's Nairobi International Marathon just looked too fresh and it proved to be his undoing. The man, identified as 28-year-old Julius Njogu, was arrested for cheating yesterday and charged with fraud. Officials say he hid among a group of spectators before joining the race near the finish.
