SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City could make recycling mandatory for large condo complexes, apartments and businesses. The requirement would be the first of its kind in Utah.

A public hearing on the Solid Waste and Recyclable Regulation ordinance is scheduled for November and a final Salt Lake City Council vote is expected in early December.

Councilwoman Erin Mendenhall says residents have complained about the city's policy of providing recycling programs for single-family homes but not those living in apartment complexes.

The proposal would allow the city to fine complexes and businesses that don't offer recycling, but it makes an exception for places that reuse at least half the waste through other means, like composting.

If it passes, the city would spend six months helping businesses and property managers set up recycling programs.
