BEATTY, Nev. (AP) — A stretch of Nevada's U.S. 95 has reopened after a fire at a closed radioactive waste site was extinguished. Nye County Sheriff Sharon Wehrly says the key north-south highway was reopened to traffic yesterday evening after air quality testing found no contamination. Other roads in the area about 115 miles north of Las Vegas remain closed.
FALLON, Nev. (AP) — The Nevada Highway Patrol says driver inattention apparently led to the single-vehicle rollover that killed a South Lake Tahoe police officer, his wife and another woman on U.S. Highway 50 near Fallon over the weekend. The couple's four children were injured, but are expected to recover.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada is fighting back against a legal challenge that would dismantle the state's broad new school choice program. The Nevada Attorney General's office says the program doesn't provide money to religious schools but to parents, who can choose to use it at a religious school or elsewhere. The suit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union.
NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — Authorities have arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with the death of his 17-year-old girlfriend, who was shot at a North Las Vegas home. The Las Vegas Sun reports that the boy was arrested Sunday night and booked into a Clark County juvenile detention center. Detectives say the 16-year-old suspect shot the girl at the home, and later tried to hide the handgun.
