JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant on Friday nominated Brandon High School principal Buddy Bailey to the state Board of Education.
Bailey will serve several months while awaiting confirmation by state senators, which is common practice for people nominated to state boards while the Legislature is not in session.
"His passion for education spans more than three decades, and he has a proven record of dedication to students," Bryant said in a news release about Bailey.
Bryant chose Bailey to serve the final eight years of a nine-year term started by Richard Morrison, who is leaving the state board and stepping down from the job as an assistant superintendent of Rankin County schools. A new superintendent has been elected in Rankin County.
Morrison's seat on the nine-member board must be filled by a school administrator.
Bailey has been Brandon High principal since 2008. Before that, he was principal of Brandon Middle School, starting in 2000.
He earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education, a master's degree in health and physical education, and a master's degree in educational administration, all from Mississippi College.
"It is my hope to work with all stakeholders to establish a common vision and take on the challenges that face us today in education," Bailey said in the governor's news release.
