JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The deputy superintendent of the Jackson Public School District has resigned.

Lorene Essex, who followed Superintendent Cedrick Gray from their positions in Tennessee's Fayette County Schools to Jackson in 2012, confirmed her departure Thursday.

Essex tells The Clarion-Ledger (http://on.thec-l.com/1LnkaJr) she just made a decision to resign. she declined to elaborate.

Essex made $119,797 last school year, making her the second highest-paid district employee. The office Essex oversaw is charged with ensuring all teachers and administrators are trained and qualified.

School Board President Beneta Burt declined to comment, citing personnel issues.
