BOONSBORO, Md. (AP) — A hiker who died after falling off Annapolis Rock has been identified.

The Herald-Mail reports (http://bit.ly/1NEVEJI) that Maryland Natural Resources Police have identified the hiker as 44-year-old Alexei Likhtman, a mathematical physics professor at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom.

Natural Resources Police spokesman Lt. Art Windemuth is quoted by the newspaper as saying that Likhtman was taking photos of the Annapolis Rock area near Boonsboro Sunday morning. Windemuth says Likhtman jumped or stepped onto a lower ledge, tripped and fell about 45 feet. He was pronounced dead about noon on Sunday.

University officials said in a statement that Likhtman was in the area ahead of a conference in Baltimore he was due to attend.

School officials say they are providing support to staff and students.
