BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) — A 36-year-old Montana State University student was stabbed in the throat in a campus housing area Tuesday, and two people were being held for questioning, a university official said.

The unnamed student was stabbed in the Bozeman school's graduate and family housing area, MSU spokesman Tracy Ellig said. He made his way several blocks to the Strand Union Building, where medical personnel working at a blood drive spotted him walking down the hall and trying to enter a restroom.

"He was holding his throat with his hand, and passers-by noticed he was bleeding through his hand," Ellig said.

The student received medical assistance until an ambulance arrived. Officials at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital did not return a call for comment on the student's condition.

Police officers spoke with the student at the union building and in the hospital, MSU police Chief Robert Putzke said in a statement. "The man reported that he had been in a fight and had been cut on the neck with a knife," Putzke said.

Officers went to the student's residence and took a man and a woman into custody, Putzke said. They were being held for questioning, but they had not been charged with a crime.

The victim knows the suspects, Putzke said. "MSU believes this was an incident involving a dispute between individuals and that there is no wider threat to campus safety," he said.

The victim lives in one of the housing units that make up the campus graduate and family housing, a mix of apartment blocks and family residences spread over a large area west of the central campus.

Immediately after the student was found, the university sent out an alert on Twitter saying the stabbing happened in the union building and warning people to stay away.

The school later sent out another alert saying the stabbing happened in family housing and that the union was operating normally.
