LAS VEGAS (AP) — U.S. Sen. Harry Reid is expected to point to Nevada's impact on the presidential race on the eve of the election's first Democratic debate, at a Washington Post forum. The longtime Democratic Nevada senator is scheduled to appear at the pre-debate event held at the MGM Grand casino-hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. Reid is retiring from the Senate at the end of his term in 2016.

SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Sparks police are looking for the driver in a hit-and-run accident that killed a pedestrian on the edge of Sparks and Reno. Police say the 55-year-old Sparks man appeared to have been walking in the bike lane next to the sidewalk when he was struck from behind. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada will triple the size of a state park after acquiring thousands of acres of undeveloped land nearby. The Elko Daily Free Press reports that the Nevada Division of State Lands now owns 2,980 acres in eastern Nevada surrounding Cave Lake State Park near Ely. The land was previously controlled by the U.S. Forest Service. Nevada has proposed two other land acquisitions.

HAWTHORNE, Nev. (AP) — State law officers are investigating the death of an inmate at the Mineral County jail in Hawthorne. Deputies say the man was unresponsive when they found him in a cell on Friday. The name of the man is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. No other details have been released.
