COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina authorities say another dam has failed in the Columbia area as historic flooding continues throughout the state. Officials are telling residents who live on about a dozen roads to seek higher ground immediately. Several dams have failed in recent days, rattling residents who thought the worst had passed over the weekend. Even though sunshine is expected in the state today, officials have said flooding could continue as stormwater drains down waterways.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The flooding in South Carolina has claimed another life. Authorities say an 82-year-old man who had been missing has been found dead in his vehicle in Columbia. They say the man's car had been underwater in a residential area north of downtown. State officials say there have been 11 weather-related deaths in South Carolina, and two in North Carolina.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A team from the National Transportation Safety Board is on its way to Jacksonville, Florida, to study debris from a sunken U.S.-based cargo ship. A board member says "survival factors" will be one focus of the investigation into the sinking of the ship with 33 crew members on board in Hurricane Joaquin (wah-KEEN') near the Bahamas. She says the NTSB's investigation will be separate from the Coast Guard's work and won't interfere with search-and-rescue operations.
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (neh-ten-YAH'-hoo) has visited the site in the West Bank where Palestinian gunmen last week killed an Israeli couple in their car as their four children watched from the backseat. The attack kicked off a bloody holiday weekend in which four Israelis were killed and four Palestinians were killed amid violent protests. Israel has already sent thousands of soldiers to battle the recent outbreak.
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks have been mixed in early trading, after a solid gain yesterday that sent the Dow more than 300 points higher. World stocks have been mostly higher today on hopes for new stimulus from Japan's central bank. Markets are increasingly confident the U.S. Federal Reserve will hold off for longer on raising interest rates following last week's jobs report that showed the U.S. economy was creating fewer jobs.
