NEW YORK, Jul 18, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- New York's Symphony Space is presenting its first summer stock show, "Manhattan Madcaps of 1924," a loosely-woven story with 22 Rogers & Hart songs.
The Summer Stock on Broadway series begins with a crazy little "Madcaps" plot involving four young couples searching for love and affordable rent in the big city. That vehicle gives the eight performers a reason to deliver almost two dozen melodies written by one of America's most prolific songwriting teams.
The cast belts out the songs with energy and enthusiasm, entertaining the audience for the show's 75 minutes, the New York Times reported.
Musical-theater fans might enjoy forgotten gems, including the "Stonewall Moskowitz March" and three obscure songs with the same melody that would become thematic in the "Blue Moon."
Despite jokes that fall flat and a questionable story line, the performance succeeds, proving that a ticket price of $19 and bucolic surroundings can suffice for the purpose of high-spirited summer stock, the Times reported.
"Manhattan Madcaps of 1924" continues through Sunday.
