MIAMI (AP) — Forecasters say Hurricane Joaquin is again a Category 4 storm with top sustained winds of 145 mph. The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Joaquin is centered about 455 miles southwest of Bermuda and moving northeast. A tropical storm warning and a hurricane watch are in effect for Bermuda. Joaquin swept across the Bahamas on Friday.
NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — An intensive search is under way off the southeastern Bahamas for a cargo ship with 33 people on board that lost power and began taking on water during Hurricane Joaquin. It hasn't been heard from since. U.S. Coast Guard and Navy aircraft are combing the area but weather is hampering efforts. The crew is made up of 28 Americans and five Poles.
ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) — The father of the gunman who killed nine people at an Oregon community college on Thursday says he's struggling to understand how and why the shooting happened. Ian Mercer, who lives in California, also says he was stunned to learn his son possessed so many guns. Authorities say Christopher Sean Harper-Mercer had 14 guns and took six to the campus.
OLIN, N.C. (AP) — An official in North Carolina says 25 people were injured when a concrete canopy collapsed on a group of high school band students gathered for a competition. It happened today at North Iredell High School in Olin, about 55 miles north of Charlotte. Initial reports indicate a box truck hit one of the canopy supports and the awning then fell, hitting students underneath it.
NEW YORK (AP) —Officials suspect a recently disconnected stove may have caused an apparent gas explosion that killed a woman and injured three others in Brooklyn today. The front of the three-story building was blown into the street. An official says the tenant who lived in the apartment where the blast occurred moved out about a week ago. The dead woman was in her 60s and lived a floor above.
