SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah's Democratic Party is criticizing Republican lawmakers for meeting behind closed doors Tuesday to discuss a proposal to expand Medicaid.
Democratic Party chair Peter Corroon says GOP House representatives and senators should have opened their Tuesday meetings to the media and the public when discussing such an important issue.
Corroon made the comments at a press conference with the left-leaning, good-government group Alliance for a Better Utah outside the doors of a room where House Republicans were meeting.
GOP legislative leaders say they're briefing their fellow Republicans on the status of a Medicaid plan that they're still crafting with Utah's Republican governor.
They've released few details after meeting secretly all summer but say their plan would help more of Utah's poor get private insurance and require doctors, hospitals and others to help pay for the program.
