CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers announced they have placed defensive end Charles Johnson on injured reserve/designated to return with a hamstring injury.

Johnson will miss a minimum of eight games and will be eligible to return in Week 12 on Thanksgiving Day against the Dallas Cowboys.

Johnson strained his right hamstring in the fourth quarter of Carolina's 27-22 win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. The Panthers traded Monday with the Chicago Bears to acquire veteran defensive end Jared Allen to help fill the void.

Allen is expected to start Sunday for the Panthers (3-0) against Tampa Bay opposite either Kony Ealy or Wes Horton.

Johnson has five tackles and one sack this season. He has 63.5 sacks for his career, second-most in franchise history.
