PRAGUE (AP) — A jockey has died after falling in a warm-up race in the Czech Republic for one of the toughest European events, the Velka Pardubicka steeplechase.
Course head Josef Vymazal told public radio on Tuesday that Czech jockey Michal Koehl had died from his injuries after falling during the race in Brno, when his horse Zadar stumbled at a hurdle. There was no contact with another horse, Vymazal said.
The 36-year-old Koehl was an experienced jockey. He won 71 races of the 780 he rode, including two jumps races in Britain.
It was the second death at the course in the last five years.
