WASHINGTON (AP) — Pope Francis has found plenty of common ground today with President Barack Obama, on issues including climate change, immigration and inequality. On his first full day in Washington, the pope made clear that he wouldn't sidestep issues that have deeply divided Americans. Speaking at the White House, he enthusiastically embraced Obama's climate change agenda. And he said he was happy to be in a country that was "largely built" by immigrant families.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Even amid the tight security surrounding the pope's visit to Washington, a five-year-old girl has been able to share with him a message about immigration. The girl got beyond a barricade and approached the popemobile this morning in Washington, carrying a T-shirt with a message about the status of immigrant parents of children born in the United States. She also had a letter addressed to the pope. When the pontiff saw her, she was brought forward for a papal kiss and blessing. And a guard passed the shirt and message into the popemobile.

They say the bishops acted only under the threat of hundreds of lawsuits. Addressing church leaders in a prayer service today, Francis said they had faced the crisis at "great sacrifice," and "without fear of self-criticism."
