PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona officials say a suspect has been arrested in connection with a string of shootings along Phoenix-area freeways that have kept drivers on edge for weeks. A spokesman for Gov. Doug Ducey says a man was taken into custody at a Wal-Mart in Glendale, a suburb west of Phoenix. There have been 11 confirmed shootings of vehicles in the Phoenix area involving bullets or other projectiles. Most occurred along Interstate 10, a major route through the city.

MACKINAC ISLAND, Michigan (AP) — Jeb Bush says Barack Obama is "an American" and "a Christian." Appearing at a GOP conference in Michigan, Bush also called for a new era of civility in national politics. Bush was referring to Republican rival Donald Trump declining to correct a questioner who called Obama "Muslim" and "not even an American."

WASHINGTON (AP) — American and Russian military chiefs are talking to make sure signals don't get crossed in Syria, where Russia is building up forces. The Pentagon is concerned that there could be conflicts with coalition airstrikes.

BOSTON (AP) — A state official in Massachusetts says a mother and her boyfriend are "blaming each other" for the death of a little girl who was found dead inside a trash bag on a Boston Harbor beach this summer. State House Speaker Robert DeLeo says he's been briefed on the investigation, and that the little girl has been identified as Bella Bond. The mother and the boyfriend face charges.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency is accusing Volkswagen of using software that enabled about 500,000 of its diesel cars to emit fewer smog-causing pollutants during testing. The EPA has ordered VW to fix the cars at its own expense. It could face billions in fines.
