LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas police are asking the federal government to help identify causes and solutions to overcrowding at the downtown Clark County Detention Center.
The department said in a statement Monday the U.S. Department of Justice will review court schedules, bail amounts, bail bond fee increases and staffing questions
Las Vegas police administer the jail, which has about 3,400 beds and averaged a record 3,900 inmates a day last year.
Police say the average prisoner is in custody for more than three weeks. That's slightly above the national average.
Deputy Las Vegas Police Chief Charles Hank says he hopes the study helps identify how social service and community re-entry programs can be used to reduce recidivism.
