SALT LAKE CITY — The state of Utah has two nationally-ranked teams for the first time since the 2009 season.
The BYU Cougars jumped into the Associated Press Top 25 Poll with a splash at No. 19 and the Amway USA Today Coaches Poll at No. 22 Sunday following the Cougars win over then-No. 20 Boise State in dramatic fashion late in the game.
The ranking is the first time since the fifth week (No. 18) of the 2014 season that the Cougars have been included in any Top 25 rankings in the season. BYU dropped out of the rankings last year after losing to Utah State in week six of play. It was the same week Utah jumped into the Top 25 for the first time since 2010.
The Utes, too, continued to climb the rankings Sunday, coming in at No. 21 in the AP Poll and No. 21 in the Coaches Poll, after beating in-state rival Utah State 24-14 Friday. Utah was previously No. 24 in the AP Poll and No. 25 in the Coaches Poll.
The top five in each poll changed, with Ohio State remaining at No. 1., followed by Alabama, TCU, Michigan State and Baylor in both polls. The SEC, which had a record 10 teams in last week's AP Poll, saw three drop out of the rankings for a total of seven. The Pac-12 comes in at No. 2, with five teams ranked in both polls, including USC (No. 6:), UCLA (No. 10), Oregon (No. 12), Arizona (No. 20), and Utah (No. 21).
