SHELTON, Wash. (AP) — The Army says a soldier who vanished during a parachute training operation in Washington state has been found dead after a 10-hour search. The soldier was part of the special forces unit based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord who jumped from a plane yesterday with other service members. A spokesman for the 1st Special Forces Group says a local rescue team helping in the search discovered the soldier's body in a heavily wooded area.
MADRID (AP) — Spanish officials say a body found on a rural property in northwestern Spain is most likely that of an American woman who disappeared while on a pilgrimage. The 41-year-old Arizona woman, Denise Thiem, was last seen April 5 walking along the route known as the St. James Way. Officials say the remains were found on the farm of a suspect arrested yesterday.
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — The head of Saudi Arabia's civil defense directorate says high winds were to blame for the toppling of a massive crane that smashed into Mecca's Grand Mosque and killed at least 107 people. It happened during a violent thunderstorm that roared through Islam's holiest city yesterday. It was the deadliest incident in years surrounding the annual pilgrimage that gets underway in full later this month.
BERLIN (AP) — Some 600 French mayors and many humanitarian groups have gathered in Paris to address the question of migrant housing. Today's session with the French interior minister aims to lay the groundwork for France to take in 24,000 refugees over the next two years. Meanwhile, German officials are expecting a total of 10,000 or more migrants to arrive in Munich today. Germany takes in more asylum seekers than any other country in Europe — and expects to handle at least 800,000 this year.
KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — A renewed cease-fire in eastern Ukraine has held for more than 10 days, createing the possibility of progress on the political level to resolve the conflict. That's according to the head of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which is monitoring the conflict in eastern Ukraine. Despite a cease-fire declared in February, both Ukrainian troops and the Russia-backed separatists continued to carry out regular artillery strikes until they pledged anew to implement the truce on Sept. 1.
