ST. LOUIS (AP) — Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry is dropping out of the race for president, ending his second bid for the Republican nomination. He becomes the first major candidate of the 2016 campaign to give up on the White House. Perry will speak to a group of conservative activists in St. Louis tonight. He had suspended his cash-strapped campaign while polling at near zero.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department is affirming that former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton had the right to delete personal emails from her private server. Government lawyers made the assertion this week in a public records lawsuit filed by Judicial Watch, an advocacy group.

WASHINGTON (AP) —A top bomb-maker for an al-Qaida cell is believed to be dead. The Pentagon says intelligence analysts think David Drugeon (dah-VEED' droo-ZHAHN'), a French-born member of the Khorasan group, was killed in a U.S. airstrike in Syria in July. The airstrike also killed a key leader of the group.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Secret Service says a police officer was injured while escorting Vice President Joe Biden's motorcade along a highway in New York. The officer was taken to a nearby hospital. His condition is unknown. The New York Police Department motorcycle officer was injured as Biden returned to LaGuardia Airport after spending two days in the city.

NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams' quest for her Grand Slam is over. Roberta Vinci stunned Williams 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the U.S. Open semifinals today in New York. It was one of the greatest upsets in tennis history. The 43rd-ranked Italian had never won a set off the 21-time major champion in four previous meetings and was in her first career Grand Slam semifinal at age 32.
