The Box Elder Community Pantry was started in 1969 so that neighbors helping neighbors could ensure local residents don't go hungry or have food insecurity. It's a customer-choice and appointment-based pantry. Clients may come once a month and pick out 10 to 14 days of food from the selection on the shelves. This ensures they get the right amount of food based upon their family size and that no family gets food that they won't eat. Having an appointment ensures there is not a line that clients must stand in to receive food, allowing them to keep their dignity. The Box Elder Community Pantry engages in creative partnerships, such as cooperating with other food pantries throughout Utah by spreading any donated surplus around to help eliminate food insecurity statewide. Partnering with local grocery stores and farmers allows for the distribution of fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy items to provide nutritious choices. This encourages clients to continue healthy behaviors even in times of hardship. SelectHealth recognizes the neighborly support provided by The Box Elder Community Pantry as another example of how Utah Gives Back.
