WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is prepared to increase the number of refugees it resettles. Two officials and a congressional aide say that Secretary of State John Kerry privately told members of Congress the United States will boost its worldwide quota for resettling refugees from 70,000 to 75,000 next year. A fraction of those would be from Syria.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden says the United States plans to meet with Israel to discuss how the U.S. can ensure Israel's military advantage over its enemies. U.S. officials say such a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is already in the works. Biden made his remarks to Jewish leaders at his official residence.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has begun debating the Iran nuclear deal. Republicans assailed it, while Democrats defended it as the best option to keep the Iranians from developing nuclear weapons. Opponents of the deal, including Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, rallied against it outside of the U.S. Capitol.
TOKYO (AP) — Heavy rain is pummeling Japan for a second straight day. The severe weather is making rivers overflow and causing landslides and localized flooding in the eastern part of the country. The rain followed Tropical Storm Etau, which caused similar flooding and landslides Wednesday as it crossed central Japan.
MIAMI (AP) — Another tropical storm has formed in the Atlantic. The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Henri was centered Wednesday night about 250 miles southeast of Bermuda with top sustained winds of 40 mph. It poses no current threat to land.
