LAS VEGAS (AP) — Fire officials say a British Airways airplane was accelerating for takeoff when it caught fire on the runway at the Las Vegas airport, forcing the pilot to hit the brakes. Yesterday's blaze sent smoke pouring from an engine and led passengers and crew to flee down emergency slides. The plane was leaving for a 10-hour flight to London. A total of 27 people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, mostly from the evacuation slide.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Wild horse advocates are calling for a federal investigation into an emergency mustang roundup in southern Nevada where government officials say more than two dozen had to be euthanized due to severe starvation. The executive director of Protect Mustangs is asking the Interior Department's inspector general to investigate whether the animals were killed as a convenient way to save money.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The University of Nevada, Las Vegas is now in a tie for the second-most racially and ethnically diverse campus of its kind in the country. UNLV has been in the top 10 for the past five years. UNLV Chief Diversity Officer Rainier Spencer said the designation was a reflection of the rich cultural diversity in southern Nevada.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Casino mogul Steve Wynn says he and his staff are excited to host the first Democratic presidential debate of the campaign at the Wynn resort on the Las Vegas Strip. CNN and the Democratic National Committee say the debate is scheduled for Oct. 13. It's the first of six planned matchups.
