BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A state corrections officer has been arrested for the rape of an inmate who was taken to the hospital back in May.

WBRZ-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1EHfwZk ) 58-year-old Michael Gaiter was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of aggravated rape and malfeasance in office Wednesday. It was unknown if he has an attorney.

Investigators said a 30-year-old inmate was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge due to seizures May 4. Sometime early the next morning, Baton Rouge Police say the inmate was raped, allegedly by Gaiter.

After the alleged incident, Gaiter showed the inmate pictures of his family. Ultimately, the inmate says he fell asleep. When he awoke, he reported the alleged incident to a new guard on duty.
