HOUSTON (AP) — Authorities in Texas now say the man they are speaking with in connection with the fatal shooting of a Harris County sheriff's deputy is a person of interest. A sheriff's office spokesman says authorities are searching a home that's about a quarter-mile away from the suburban Houston gas station where Deputy Darren Goforth was gunned down last night. He says no one has been charged.
MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (AP) — New York City police say a bystander has died after he was accidentally shot by a plainclothes officer who also shot an armed suspect after an undercover gun buy went bad. Felix Kumi of Mount Vernon died early today. Authorities say he was shot yesterday after a man pulled a gun on an undercover NYPD officer during a probe into the sale of illegal firearms. The wounded suspect is hospitalized with charges pending. A second suspect has been arrested on drugs and weapons charges.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Residents and community activists in New Orleans' Lower 9th Ward have gathered at the levee where, 10 years ago, Hurricane Katrina's storm waters broke through and submerged the neighborhood. After several speeches, a parade snaked through the neighborhood while music played from boom boxes and people sold water from ice chests under the hot sun.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Tropical Storm Erika has dissipated, but folks in the Tampa Bay area are watching it carefully. The National Hurricane Center says the storm degenerated into a trough of low pressure after encountering mountains and an unfavorable environment in Hispaniola. But emergency managers in the Tampa Bay area are worried about heavy rain. The ground, rivers and lakes in the area are already waterlogged from recent storms.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A hearing is set for Monday for a South Carolina mother who drove her three children into the ocean off Daytona Beach. Ebony Wilkerson has been in a state psychiatric hospital after a judge ruled last year that she was incompetent to stand trial and could be a threat to herself or others. A judge previously ruled Wilkerson was not guilty by reason of insanity on charges of child abuse, and prosecutors dropped attempted murder charges. The three children involved in the incident are in state custody.
