HOUSTON (AP) — A major manhunt is on in the Houston area for whoever shot and killed a sheriff's deputy who was filling the gas tank of his patrol vehicle. Authorities say Deputy Darren Goforth was approached from behind by a man who fired several shots and even more bullets after the deputy was down.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — Florida is bracing for at least heavy rains from a weakening Tropical Storm Erika. Officials say the storm killed at least 20 people and left 30 missing on the small eastern Caribbean island of Dominica. Haiti and the Dominican Republic have hbeen getting drenched.

QUINCY, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois Department of Public Health says a veterans' home is under scrutiny after two residents died of Legionnaires' Disease. The health department said the two residents had underlying medical conditions. Both were among 23 residents of the facility in Quincy, about 300 miles southwest of Chicago, who had earlier been diagnosed with the disease.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — One of the highest ranking republicans in New Mexico has been hit with embezzlement, fraud, money laundering and campaign finance charges. Attorney General Hector Balderas has been at odds with Secretary of State Dianna Duran over enforcement of the state's laws governing campaigns. Duran is accused of funneling money to her personal use.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Separate attacks by Taliban insurgents in eastern Afghanistan have killed at least eight police officers. Authorities say another 15 police officers were wounded in the attacks on police checkpoints in the province's Andar and Qarabagh districts. Insurgents have targeted police checkpoints targeted in recent months, resulting in high casualties. An official also says an Afghan airstrike killed 16 insurgents and wounded 17 late Friday.
