SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — A state of emergency is in effect for Florida, which could feel the effects of Tropical Storm Erika by late Sunday and early Monday. Forecasters say mountains on the island of Hispaniola could weaken it to a tropical depression and possibly cause it to dissipate entirely. At least 20 people have died from Erika on the Caribbean island of Dominica.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Northwest fire officials say incoming cooler weather could help calm the massive blazes that threaten thousands of homes, but wind storms may cause extreme fire behavior in the interim. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack was briefed today in Portland, Oregon. Vilsack says the Forest Service is spending $10 million a day for fire suppression in the region.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is comparing tensions between the U.S. and Israel over the Iranian nuclear deal to a family dispute. In a webcast with Jewish Americans today, Obama said "Like all families, sometimes there are going to be disagreements." He also said he expects quick improvements in ties between the longtime allies once the accord is implemented.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden is criticizing pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine for threatening to take more territory and hold their own elections. The White House says in a phone call to Ukraine's president today, Biden offered U.S. support for steps the country's president is taking to decentralize power and fulfill Ukraine's obligations under a peace plan.

VIENNA (AP) — Death and desperation is mounting in Europe's migrant crisis. Austrian police say 71 people appear to have suffocated in the back of an abandoned truck, while an estimated 200 people are feared drowned off Libya after two overloaded boats capsized. More than 300,000 people fleeing war-torn areas such as Syria have sought to cross the Mediterranean Sea so far in 2015.
