OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) — The lawyer of Guinea's former coup leader says the ex-strongman will not be able to take part in next month's presidential election after he was barred from returning to the country.
Moussa "Dadis" Camara tried to fly back to Guinea's capital after several years of exile in Burkina Faso. However, his plane was diverted and his return blocked by Guinean authorities.
Attorney Jean Baptiste Haba said Friday that Camara needs to physically register for the Oct. 11 vote, and he no longer believes the ex-coup leader can meet the necessary deadline.
Camara seized power after the death of the country's longtime dictator in late 2008. He later went into exile after being shot in the head by one of his aides.
