COVENTRY, R.I. (AP) — A school committee in Rhode Island plans to send a resolution to Gov. Gina Raimondo's office asking her to rescind the HPV vaccine mandate.
WJAR-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1EYjzLh ) the Coventry School Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to send the resolution.
State health officials have said there are no plans to change a new requirement that middle school students in the state get the HPV vaccine, despite opposition from parents and some lawmakers.
Children entering seventh grade in September must get the vaccine unless their parents seek an exemption for medical or religious reasons.
School Committee member James Pierson says the resolution is about parental rights.
A spokesperson from Raimondo's office said that while the governor recognizes the concerns, the CDC recommends the vaccine as a safe and effective way to help prevent cancer.
