A lasting image of 9/11 will be on view for the public during the five-year anniversary commemoration of the terror attacks.

The Bellevue Hospital Wall of Prayer memorial will be displayed at the Museum of the City of New York from Sept. 1-8.

In the days following the attacks, family members of those lost posted pictures of their loved ones and messages of grief to the plywood wall that stood at a construction site adjacent to the hospital.

Soon, people from around the world began to fill the wall with notes of sympathy for those affected by the destruction.

"We think of monuments as structures carved in stone, but this is no less a monument," said Barbara Livenstein, of the museum.

"The wall is a powerful tribute to the city's shared grief after the immediate aftermath of 9/11."
