CHELAN, Wash. (AP) — Washington Gov. Jay Inslee says his state is facing an "unprecedented cataclysm" from wildfires. Inslee says yesterday's death of three firefighters "burned a big hole" in the heart of the state. They were killed near the town of Twisp. Officials say their vehicle crashed Wednesday and flames rolled over them before they could escape. They ranged in age from 20 to 31.

NEW YORK (AP) — Buyers have been few and far between on Wall Street today. A big sell-off is blamed on worries about another slump in Chinese shares and heavy selling by technical traders. The market had its worst performance in 18 months. The Dow plunged 358 points.

ATLANTA (AP) — He faces radiation and chemotherapy, but an upbeat former President Jimmy Carter says he is at ease despite being diagnosed with melanoma. Carter told reporters today that doctors removed cancer from his liver but that bits of it are in his brain. In additional to targeted radiation, he'll also be given injections of a newly approved drug to help his immune system target cancer cells.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The lawyer representing Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who left his infantry post in Afghanistan and was held by the Taliban for five years, says statements BY Donald Trump About Bergdahl are threatening the soldier's right to a fair trial. Attorney Eugene Fidell (fy-DELL) says Bergdahl is charged with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, not treason. Trump has called Bergdahl a "dirty, rotten traitor."

BRIDGETON, N.J. (AP) — A grand jury in New Jersey's Cumberland County has voted not to file charges against two police officers for fatally shooting a man who defied orders by stepping out of a car. Video showed that Jerame Reid had his hands raised during the December traffic stop. The Bridgeton Police Department officers had previously arrested Reid. His widow says she's disgusted by the grand jury's decision and ashamed to be a resident of Bridgeton.
