PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — There has still been no West Nile virus detected in Rhode Island this year.
The state Department of Environmental Management said Tuesday that 105 mosquito samples from 37 traps set statewide during the week of Aug. 3 came back negative for both West Nile and eastern equine encephalitis.
Results from 102 additional samples collected from 32 traps set Aug. 12 are pending.
No mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile or EEE so far this year in Rhode Island but state officials urge that precautions still be taken.
The agency says the best prevention against mosquito-borne illness is preventing bites.
Residents are urged to use mosquito repellent, put screens on windows and doors and eliminate areas of standing water, where mosquitoes breed.
