BATH, Mich. (AP) — George Guerre, the 1940s Michigan State running back who spent a year at Michigan, has died. He was 91.
Michigan State said Friday that Guerre died of congestive heart failure Thursday at his home in Bath.
The 5-foot-5, 157-pound Guerre led the Spartans in rushing, total offense, all-purpose yards and punting for three straight seasons from 1946-48.
He ran for 1,721 yards and 11 touchdowns in his career, with six 100-yard rushing games. His average of 6.75 yards per carry is the best in school history. Guerre accounted for six other scores — throwing five TD passes and catching one.
Guerre attended Michigan in 1942 before serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, where he was a navigator on B-17 missions over Italy and Africa.
From Flint, Guerre is in the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame and the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame.
