FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — The shooting of a suspect by plainclothes officers in Ferguson, Missouri, is drawing criticism from protest leaders. One of them says the force shown by police during protests overnight was "excessive and antagonistic." Kayla Reed called it a "poor decision" for officers to be in plain clothes because it made it difficult for protesters to identify police. She and others were also concerned because police were not wearing body cameras. St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar says the department doesn't have funding for cameras for all of its nearly 900 officers. The suspect is in critical condition. Police say he had opened fire on them.

LOWER LAKE, Calif. (AP) — A wildfire that broke out several miles southwest of a destructive fire in Northern California has doubled in size overnight, charring nearly 8 square miles. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says evacuations have been ordered for the new fire that started yesterday. It's burning near a wildfire that has destroyed 43 homes and chewed up more than 100 square miles since it started on July 29. It is now 85 percent contained.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump still isn't offering any apologies for his comment about Fox News Channel's Megan Kelly after last week's debate. He told NBC's "Today" show that it "wasn't meant to be much of an insult." And Trump says all of the controversy has been "fueled by the press."

BEIRUT (AP) — There's an apparent goodwill gesture today from Syrian President Bashar Assad. Syrian authorities have released a prominent human rights activist, who had spent more than three years in prison for reporting on the crackdown on protesters in the early days of the uprising against Assad. Human rights groups say the government continues to hold thousands of political prisoners.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Warren Buffett appears to be making the biggest wager in his long investment career. He's buying aerospace and industrial company Precision Castparts for more than $32 billion, in a deal that will continue to reshape his Berkshire Hathaway empire. It would top Buffet's $26.7 billion deal for BNSF railroad in 2010.
