KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) — Two University of Rhode Island students are spending the summer educating Rhode Islanders about how to reduce drinking water contamination.
Jessica Janiec and Mahrukh Shaikh will visit three or four different venues around the state each week to educate private well owners about proper well water testing.
Janiec and Shaikh say well owners are responsible for testing and regulating the quality of their wells.
They say well owners sometimes purchase unnecessary water treatment systems.
Janiec and Shaikh will teach well owners what to test for and how often and will provide tips for preventing contamination.
The students' project is funded by the Rhode Island Department of Health.
The project is part of the university's Coastal Fellows Program, which helps undergraduate students in addressing current environmental problems.
