SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah senior quarterback Brian Johnson has been named one of 26 candidates for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. The award's criteria include athletic success, off-field citizenship and scholastic achievement.
Johnson ranks in the top 10 in 13 career categories at Utah. His highest placing comes in career completion percentage (65.0), where he ranks second, and yards per completion (12.05), which is third. He also enters his senior season ranked fourth in passing efficiency (140.93) and in total offensive yards (5,601) at Utah.
Last year, the Baytown, Texas, native was 8-2 as a starter, returning from injury to lead Utah to wins in eight of its last nine games. He guided Utah to its seventh straight bowl victory in the Poinsettia Bowl, and he was named the game's offensive MVP. He led the league in completion percentage (66.5). His completion percentage was the third-best single-season effort by a Utah QB.
Johnson was a second-team all-conference selection as a sophomore in 2005 and is a three-time Academic all-MWC honoree. He received his undergraduate degree last month in mass communication and he is beginning work on a second degree. Johnson has a 3.32 cumulative grade-point average.
The 2008 winner will be presented with the award on December 5.
