KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Cornerback Sean Smith of the Chiefs has been suspended by the NFL for the first three games of the regular season. He'll miss games against two of the league's top quarterbacks, the Broncos' Peyton Manning and Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers. He was suspended by the league for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.
MONTREAL (AP) — Veteran forward Alexander Semin (SEHM'-ihn) has signed a one-year contract for $1.1 million with Montreal. Semin, who once scored 40 goals with Washington, has spent the last three seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes. They bought out his contract on July 1 and owe the 31-year-old Russian $14 million over the next six years.
BERKSHIRE, England (AP) — The second round of the Senior British Open was never completed. Heavy rain and flooding shut down play with very few players on the course. The plan is to complete the round tomorrow and then play the third round with players using the first and 10th hole tees.
KANSAS CITY (AP) — Pitcher Scott Kazmir, the newest member of the Houston Astros, gets his first start with his home-town team tonight. Kazmir joined the Astros yesterday in a trade with Oakland. With the Athletics he was 5-5 on the season with a 2.38 earned run average and this evening faces Kansas City.
BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — ESPN and the Missouri Valley Conference have agreed to a 10-year extension on their media rights deal that increases coverage of the league through the 2023-24 academic year. ESPN retains the rights to the MVC's men's and women's basketball tournaments and will work with the schools to develop on-campus production capabilities involving students. Overall ESPN3 will show a minimum of 820 events a year.
